Residents of the 3rd District and wider community are mourning the loss of stalwart 3rd District businessman Oswald ‘Ozzie’ Nibbs. ‘Ozzie’ as he was affectionately known worked in the hospitality industry across the Virgin Islands for decades until establishing his own business behind the Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay. Mr. Nibbs passed away at his home in Sea Cows Bay late Sunday April 14th, 2024.
Up until his death, Mr. Nibbs worked at his establishment providing local dishes and an environment that welcomed all. His establishment remains a hot spot for locals and visitors looking for a front row view of the annual horse races.
In a tribute to Mr. Nibbs, Mr. Aaron Parillon in a Facebook post said, “Losing Oswald is not just a death but a loss. Ozzie was my Godfather and my favorite by all means. When I didn’t have in my pockets but needed, Oswald would give and never looked back. There’s a lot I can say about what Oswald meant to me but I prefer to speak about what he meant to our community.”
Speaking on the very strong legacy Mr. Nibbs has left behind, Mr. Parllion said, “Oswald created an environment for young, middle aged and elders to socialize and have free speech. Oswald was a free spirited and vibrant man with a great personality. He never looked up or down at any man but looked upon you as equal. He loved his family and had a great relationship with his children Shauvonne and Shenique Moriella, Mervin Thomas Sr. and Dahero Bouncearound Freeman. Ozzie was the life of the party and took over the dance floor whenever the music hit his soul. I have no doubt Ozzie will be a first ballot hall of famer in Gods Kingdom as he exemplified “God within Man”. Lunch on Friday’s and Sunday’s, August Festival, Parade Day, District Parties, Ms. Parsons house parties among the few events won’t be the same anymore. Losing Ozzie is a tremendous loss in this country and one I can’t find the stream of thought to find a way out of.”
Another strong voice from the third district has spoken on Mr. Nibbs Legacy. Mr. Julian Willock, former Speaker of the House of Assembly in a Facebook posted said, “Ozzie, I will never forget our jokes, our playful trash talks and most of all his good cooking. He was truly a kind man: never to pass anyone without saying a hello, how you doing, or if you knew him well like I did, – a little joke. My family and I will keep the extended family in prayer. Ozzie is already missed as he is now resting in the arms of God. Rest good soldier until we meet again!”
Mr. Nibbs will be remembered as a father, husband, brother but most of all a patriot and friend to all.
The owners, management and staff of CCT, BVI Cable Ltd. and 284 Media express sincere condolences to the family of the late Oswald ‘Ozzie’ Nibbs.
