WINBVI has announced that they are proud to announce the official launch of the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence Campaign, a crucial initiative aimed at bringing awareness, providing outreach and support to members of our BVI community. One in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime with girls being particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment and exploitation.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is defined as any harmful act directed at an individual based on their gender.
This campaign focuses on addressing and preventing physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, recognizing the profound impact these forms of violence have on individuals and communities.
WINBVI believes that community plays a vital role in creating a culture of respect and equality and recently, in December 2023, joined a march through the streets of Road Town in a commitment to championing the rights of girls and young women in the BVI, ensuring they are free from harm and empowered to reach their full potential.
It is spearheaded by Mrs. British Virgin Islands 2024, Rhonda Victor-Pinnock, is powered by Unite BVI, WINBVI, along with other dedicated non-profit organizations within our community. Ms. Victor-Pinnock said “As a survivor of domestic violence, I know firsthand the pain and fear that comes with being silenced. This campaign is more than just an initiative; it’s a lifeline for those who feel unheard and unseen. I am committed to being a voice for those who are unable to speak up, and to creating a safe and supportive community where every individual can live free from violence and fear. Together, we can break the cycle of abuse and empower one another to stand strong and speak out.”
The President of the WINBVI Organization, Alicia Green, shared this with us “Our mission is to provide education, resources, and support, and ultimately to empower individuals to recognize and prevent all forms of abuse—physical, emotional, and psychological. This collaborative effort reflects our deep commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive society. We believe that through unity and collective action, we can make a significant impact and foster a culture of respect and safety for all.”
Women Empowerment Self-Defense Class
To kick off this campaign, we will begin with a discussion on various radio and media platforms 27th July thru 2nd August. This will be followed by the hosting a Women Empowerment Self-Defense Class on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Boynes Taekwondo Academy located in Kingston (next to Cedar school). This class aims to equip women with basic self-defense skills that enhance personal confidence and could potentially save their lives or the lives of their loved ones. WIN will also be hosting a self-defence class for males in early September.
The public can expect to participate in community discussions and forums so their voices can be heard and concerns addressed. The campaign also aims to review and revise the legal framework to enhance its regime for domestic violence victims.
