GOVERNOR’S OFFICE LAUNCHES $50,000 FUTURE FUND TO BENEFIT VIRGIN ISLANDS YOUTH

The Governor’s Office has announced the launch of the Future Fund, a $50,000 initiative aimed at supporting youth empowerment and promoting good governance in the Virgin Islands.

Local organizations can now apply for grants of up to $10,000 to implement projects that will benefit young people and strengthen political accountability.

The fund, supported by the United Kingdom government, is open to registered Virgin Islands non-profit organizations or partnerships that focus on empowering youth between the ages of 13 and 21. Projects should provide opportunities for young people to develop skills that could lead to future employment, particularly in sectors such as tourism, environment, agriculture, and sports—fields essential to the BVI’s sustainable development and economic growth.

In addition to youth empowerment, the Future Fund encourages initiatives that promote good governance. Registered non-profits, schools, and community groups are invited to apply for funding to support efforts that foster transparency, accountability, and citizen journalism. Projects could include developing media codes of conduct, transparency initiatives around public spending, or upskilling journalists and influencers to hold political leaders accountable.

Governor His Excellency Daniel Pruce expressed his enthusiasm for the programme, saying, “I’m proud to announce this important investment in the future growth of the Virgin Islands. As I outlined in my swearing-in speech, I am committed to supporting efforts to build a better future for the youth of the Virgin Islands. I encourage all those who are eligible to apply to please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

Applications for the Future Fund must be submitted by September 20, 2024, with successful applicants being notified by October 25. Projects are required to be completed by March 31, 2025. The application review committee, consisting of representatives from the Governor’s Office and the BVI Government, will assess submissions based on set criteria.

Interested organizations should send their applications to andrea.blumire2@fcdo.gov.uk before the deadline.
