The Ministry of Health and Social Development is set to officially launch its “BVI Moves” programme this Saturday, September 14, in celebration of Caribbean Wellness Day.
The initiative, aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle across the Virgin Islands, will kick off with a community run/walk starting at the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex at 6:00 a.m.
Participants in the event will follow a route along Admin Drive, onto Dual Carriage Way, down to ZBVI in Baugher’s Bay, and back to the complex. The event aligns with this year’s Caribbean Wellness Day theme, “Power Through Collective Action,” which emphasizes the importance of community in promoting health and wellness.
Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent Wheatley, expressed his enthusiasm for the programme, which is designed to improve the overall well-being of the Virgin Islands’ residents. In his statement to mark Caribbean Wellness Day, Wheatley highlighted the need for collective involvement to ensure the success of the initiative.
“The BVI Moves programme was born out of the remarkable success of Caribbean Moves in other countries and our own BVI Run/Walk Program from 2015,” said Honourable Wheatley. He noted that the programme will take a three-pronged approach by partnering with communities, schools, and workplaces to encourage healthy lifestyles.
Wheatley urged the public and private sectors to join in and support the initiative, stating, “We need the support of every individual, family, and community member across the BVI. Together, we can create an environment that fosters healthy habits and ensures a brighter, healthier future for all.”
The BVI Moves programme aims to promote regular physical activity, encourage healthy eating, and raise awareness about reducing the risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases. The launch marks a significant step in the territory’s efforts to promote health and wellness through community participation and partnership.
