RECORD TURNOUT FOR 13TH ANNUAL CIBC CARIBBEAN WALK FOR THE CURE

The 13th Annual CIBC Caribbean Walk for the Cure saw a record-breaking turnout on October 5, with 450 participants joining the cause to fight cancer in the British Virgin Islands.

Hosted in collaboration with the BVI Cancer Society, the event aimed to raise $75,000, with all proceeds going to support cancer patients and their families.

The walk began at 5:30 a.m., as participants embarked on a round-trip from the CIBC Caribbean bank to Sea Cow’s Bay, along the scenic coastal route. The morning’s atmosphere was electric, with the VI Plait Polers entertaining the crowd with cultural pole plaiting performances upon their return.

The funds raised from the event will benefit essential programs, including patient care, counselling, and educational campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the importance of early detection. This year, a portion of the funds will also support a data collection and analysis initiative in partnership with the BVI Cancer Society (BVICS) and the Public Health’s Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and the unwavering support from our participants and sponsors,” said Fabian Devonish, Branch Manager at CIBC Caribbean and Walk Manager. “Events like this not only raise funds but also raise awareness about cancer and the importance of community support. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”

BVI Cancer Society President, Gloria Fahie, echoed Devonish’s sentiments, stating, “The CIBC Caribbean Walk for the Cure is more than just a walk; it is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of the community in the face of cancer. We are deeply grateful for the continued support and commitment from all involved.”

His Excellency Governor Daniel Pruce also commended the efforts of both CIBC Caribbean and the BVI Cancer Society. “It’s fantastic to see so many people come together to support such an important cause. Every effort the community makes is part of the global fight against this terrible disease,” said Governor Pruce.

The walk attracted participants of all ages, including the Phillips family, who walked in memory of loved ones lost to breast cancer. “We decided to do this walk to support the cause,” said Mrs. Phillips, whose stepmother passed away from the disease. “At this time, we remember them,” she added, with another family member reflecting on a close friend who passed at the age of 47.

The Walk for the Cure is the largest fundraiser for the BVI Cancer Society, and this year’s campaign follows a series of awareness events, including Sip and Paint for the Cure, Hike for the Cure, and Hunt for the Cure. The final event, Sunset Cruise for the Cure, will be held on Saturday, October 12. Tickets for the three-hour cruise, which will feature DJs and light refreshments, are available for $100.

The Walk for the Cure campaign raised $62,525 in 2023, and this year’s target of $75,000 is expected to make an even bigger impact in the fight against cancer in the BVI.
