The Government of the Virgin Islands recently celebrated another milestone in the ongoing Housing Recovery Assistance Programme, with the completion of a new social home for Jost Van Dyke resident, Mr. Carlton Hendricks.
The home was officially handed over by the Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, who emphasized the impact of the 2017 hurricanes on the area and reiterated the government’s dedication to restoring homes to their former condition.
Honourable Wheatley acknowledged the efforts of his ministry’s team, applauding the work they continue to carry out across all districts despite being a small group. He highlighted the joy and appreciation expressed by recipients when receiving the keys to their new homes.
Second District Representative, Honourable Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull, expressed gratitude for the ministry’s commitment to rebuilding homes on Jost Van Dyke.
Honourable Turnbull said, “This marks the completion of the sixth home rebuilt for displaced families on Jost Van Dyke. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the team at the Ministry of Health and Social Development for their unwavering dedication to serving the people of the Second District and wider Virgin Islands. Their work has brought hope and relief to families in need.”
Mr. Carlton Hendricks extended his heartfelt thanks to the ministry for providing him with a new home, reflecting on the difference it has made for his family.
Project Manager Marquese Maduro of Project Management and Construction Solutions mentioned the unique challenges faced during the construction, as the project involved a pre-existing home with logistical difficulties. Despite these hurdles, he commended the construction team for their quality work.
Mr. David Fonseca of Construction Engineering Systems (B.V.I) Ltd., which undertook the construction of Mr. Hendricks’ home, expressed his satisfaction in delivering a home, acknowledging the importance of giving back to those who have contributed to the community.
Since its inception, the Housing Recovery Assistance Programme has rebuilt over 25 homes and repaired more than 200 across the Virgin Islands.
