A beautification project under the leadership of Territorial At-Large Representative, Hon. Lorna Smith, OBE, titled Roots to Resilience began over the weekend in East End.
The initiative marks the beginning of a broader mission to beautify the Virgin Islands territory-wide, while instilling a sense of national pride. Smith has on many occasions spoken of the state of the territory and her disappointment in how it is kept or lack thereof. On Saturday and Sunday, a mixture of sweeping and painting took place through the East End area.
On both days the campaign ran from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and included a wide cross-section of community involvement particularly students from across the Virgin Islands seeking community service hours.
Phase one consisted of the priming of walls in the East End community along the roadside approaching the Beef Islands bridge.
The project is expected to continue throughout the week and will include the colouring of the primed walls and introducing murals that celebrate the Virgin Islands’ vibrant culture. All residents of the Virgin Islands particularly those in the East End area are being encouraged to participate and contribute to making the BVI one we can all be proud of.
Hon. Lorna Smith and Programme Coordinator Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye spoke on the initiative on location.
