A SPIKE IN VEHICLE THEFTS – PARTICULARLY RENTAL CARS

The British Virgin Islands are experiencing a significant increase in vehicle thefts, with rental vehicles being the primary targets.

Over the two-month period from May 11 to July 11, 2024, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) revealed that it investigated eight incidents of vehicles being stolen without the owners’ consent.

Alarmingly, seven of these stolen vehicles were rental cars, while only one was privately owned. Police noted that in each case, the keys were left inside the vehicles, either by the owners or by rental customers.

The RVIPF further revealed that five of the stolen vehicles were used to commit other crimes, heightening concerns about the repercussions of these thefts. However, through coordinated investigations, intelligence-led patrols, and targeted searches, all eight vehicles have been recovered, and several individuals have been arrested and charged with various offences.

To address the rising issue of vehicle thefts, the RVIPF is urging the public to take specific precautions:

  1. Secure Your Vehicle: Always lock all doors and windows whenever your vehicle is unattended, regardless of the time of day. This significantly reduces the risk of theft.
  2. Proper Key Management: If someone else needs to collect your vehicle, ensure they have a spare key or accompany them to retrieve it immediately. Do not leave keys inside the vehicle or in an easily accessible location.
  3. Stay Vigilant: Be alert for individuals loitering or acting suspiciously in or around parking lots. Your vigilance can help deter criminal activity and protect your property.

The RVIPF also encourages anyone who notices suspicious activity or has information that could assist in their investigations to contact the police via the 311-access number. The cooperation and proactive measures of the community are crucial in maintaining safety and security in the BVI.
