The occupants of a Go-Fast vessel managed to evade capture after a dramatic encounter with law enforcement on the night of Sunday, August 25.
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), in coordination with United States Customs Border Control, intercepted the vessel in open water near Jost Van Dyke, but the individuals on board opened fire on officers before abandoning the boat and fleeing on foot on the western end of Tortola.
Despite an extensive search operation in the area, police confirmed that the suspects remain at large. The Go-Fast vessel is now in police custody, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Vanterpool has called on the public to assist in the investigation, emphasizing the dangers posed by such criminal activities.
“The reckless actions of these criminals endanger not just our officers but the entire community. We cannot allow our waters to become a haven for illegal activity. It is imperative that we unite to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of our islands,” Vanterpool stated.
The RVIPF is urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Individuals can provide tips confidentially by calling the Crime Stoppers line at 800-8477 (TIPS) or, for overseas calls, at 1-284-800-8477. Alternatively, information can be shared with the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.
Authorities stress that every piece of information, no matter how small, could be vital in advancing the investigation.
