The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has announced a substantial expansion of its CCTV surveillance network across Tortola and Virgin Gorda, boosting security and creating notable cost benefits.
By the end of 2024, over 100 advanced CCTV cameras will be installed in strategic locations throughout Tortola, while Virgin Gorda will see its CCTV sites double from five to ten, with over 20 cameras slated to enhance safety and coverage.
The expanded CCTV network is projected to bolster the RVIPF’s ability to monitor and respond to incidents across both islands, creating a safer environment for residents and visitors. This initiative, led by the RVIPF’s Systems Manager Sergeant Claude Rymer and his Communications Unit team, is a continuation of a successful CCTV installation project completed in July 2023, which saw 70 cameras installed across 32 locations in Tortola. The 2024 upgrade includes replacing many of these initial cameras with advanced models, plus adding cameras in areas previously lacking coverage.
In addition to increased security, the expansion has yielded substantial cost savings by relying on in-house expertise rather than external contractors. The RVIPF estimates that managing the upgrade internally has saved around $200,000, while regular bi-monthly maintenance performed by the RVIPF team has led to further savings of over $40,000, totaling approximately $480,000 in annual savings.
The RVIPF’s in-house approach has not only proven cost-effective but also exemplified the team’s technical capabilities. This initiative underscores the RVIPF’s commitment to public safety across the British Virgin Islands, with plans for additional funding in 2025 to further extend coverage and address any remaining gaps.
