7 AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL OFFICERS ACHIEVE 100% PASS IN SPECIALIZED METEOROLOGICAL TRAINING

The British Virgin Islands Airports Authority (BVIAA) is celebrating the success of seven Air Traffic Control Officers who have completed the Aeronautical Meteorology Observer Training Course, achieving a 100% pass rate.

The specialized training, conducted in partnership with the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), is part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to uphold international aviation safety and operational standards.

Mrs. Diana Maduro-Romney, Officer in Charge, commended the officers for their dedication, emphasizing the importance of having trained Meteorological (MET) observers on staff. “This achievement strengthens our operational capacity and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to building a highly skilled team,” she said. The new skills will enable the officers to provide precise and timely meteorological data, enhancing both the safety and efficiency of air traffic operations in the Virgin Islands.

Director of Operations, Mr. Kyle Cummings, highlighted the long-standing relationship between the Authority and CIMH, noting, “The Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology has been a trusted partner in ensuring that our staff receive the highest quality of training. This collaboration benefits not only the Authority but the entire Territory.”

Mrs. Dawn Corea-Leonard, Director of People and Culture, reiterated the BVIAA’s commitment to excellence through education and training. “This recent training demonstrates our commitment to providing our team with the tools they need to excel in their roles, ultimately benefiting the entire aviation sector and the Territory,” she said.

Air Traffic Services Manager, Mr. Phil DaSilva, expressed pride in his team, adding that the officers are now equipped with the critical knowledge to observe, collect, and report Aeronautical Meteorological Information in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). He noted that this will lead to improved efficiency within the Air Traffic Services Unit.

The training was led by Mr. John Peters of CIMH, who has over 40 years of experience in meteorology and hydrology. The successful completion of the course marks a significant step toward aligning the operational efficiency of the Air Traffic Services Unit with the strategic goals of the BVIAA.
