During the recently concluded BVI Lit Fest, acclaimed historian David Olusoga delivered a compelling lecture titled Being & Belonging.
The lecture explored themes of citizenship and identity in the United Kingdom and its Overseas Territories, drawing critical insights from the Windrush scandal and broader issues surrounding British nationality laws.
Olusoga provided a detailed examination of the history of British nationality, highlighting the concept of “conditional citizenship.” He discussed how promises of equal rights were often contradicted by policies that applied citizenship unevenly, perpetuating divisions that continue to impact communities today.
The full lecture is available on the 284 Media Facebook Page.
He spoke with 284 Media’s Jhaka Wooding following the discussion.
The event drew an engaged audience, including Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Karl Dawson, who attended to witness the insightful discussion firsthand. Speaking with 284 Media, Minister Dawson emphasized the importance of such conversations.
