Climate change took center stage during the recent official visit to the United Kingdom, as noted by Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley and Deputy Premier Hon. Lorna Smith.
During a reception for the BVI delegation, Premier Wheatley delivered a keynote speech highlighting the negative impacts of climate change on the Virgin Islands.
He updated attendees on the territory’s recovery following significant events this year, including the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto, and called for UK support in enhancing the BVI’s climate resilience.
The visit included a meeting on climate finance involving UK officials from various departments and private sector experts.
Deputy Premier Smith noted that climate change will feature prominently on the agenda of the upcoming Joint Ministerial Council Meeting.
She also noted a recent announcement that the UK Foreign Secretary will appoint the first-ever special envoy for nature. Smith expressed her desire for the BVI’s needs to be a top priority for this new envoy.
