The British Virgin Islands has expressed interest in becoming a full Member State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Premier of the Virgin Islands Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley made the announcement during a recent press conference, stating that his government will be seeking a Letter of Entrustment from the British Government to commence the process.
He said talks have already been initiated with the Minister for the Overseas Territories on the subject, with plans to have further discussions with the BVI Government before formally writing to the United Kingdom to seek permission.
Just last month, Bermuda became the first British Overseas Territory to be granted permission through a Letter of Entrustment to become a full Member State of CARICOM.
It is on this premise that Premier Wheatley believes the United Kingdom will be in favour of granting the BVI authorisation to commence the process of graduating from an Associate Member of CARICOM to a full member.
Premier Wheatley while noting the many benefits of being a Member State of CARICOM made it clear that the BVI will still have autonomy to opt out of certain agreements once not in favour.
