In response to the growing threat of cyber-attacks, the Premier of the Virgin Islands, Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley, has outlined his government’s proactive measures to safeguard critical infrastructure and sensitive data.
Speaking at a recent session of the House of Assembly, Premier Wheatley detailed the implementation of two primary methodologies to combat cyber security threats: a Security First approach and a Defense in Depth strategy.
Premier Wheatley emphasized the importance of these methodologies in protecting the government’s operations, particularly as the territory embarks on multiple e-government initiatives aimed at improving public service delivery.
Dr. Wheatley noted that over the past three years, the Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, has undertaken various measures to enhance the government’s cyber security. He said these efforts include the continuous monitoring of government-operated entities, ensuring 24-hour protection against potential threats.
Capacity training initiatives have also been a key component of the government’s strategy. Premier Wheatley highlighted the importance of equipping government departments with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively counter cyber threats.
In addressing current vulnerabilities, Premier Wheatley mentioned that his government is awaiting the results of a Cyber Risk Review conducted by the United Kingdom Home Office. He said the findings from this review will be instrumental in identifying areas for improvement and fortifying the territory’s cyber security defences.
Premier Wheatley believes that as cyber threats continue to evolve, the adoption of robust security methodologies and ongoing capacity building are essential to safeguarding the territory’s data and services.
