The Government of the Virgin Islands has announced plans to remove the existing visa requirement for Guyanese nationals travelling to the territory, marking a significant step toward strengthening ties between the two Caribbean nations.
The announcement was made by Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley during a press conference on Monday, September 30.
Premier Wheatley highlighted Guyana’s remarkable economic growth, which has accelerated since the discovery of crude oil in 2015. This discovery has transformed Guyana into the world’s fastest-growing economy, with the country recording the highest real GDP growth rate globally in both 2022 and 2023.
The premier emphasized that Guyana’s economic boom reflects its potential as a key partner in the Virgin Islands.
Premier Wheatley explained that the decision to lift the visa requirement comes at an opportune moment, as the Virgin Islands seeks to foster stronger economic, cultural, and social ties with Guyana. He stated that removing travel restrictions for Guyanese nationals would encourage greater collaboration, investment opportunities, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The premier said his government is presently working on a memorandum of understanding for deepening cooperation between Guyana and the BVI.
He also announced plans to have similar discussions with the Dominican Republic soon.
