RESIDENTS URGED TO STOCK UP ON MEDICATIONS AHEAD OF HURRICANE SEASON PEAK

As the territory approaches the peak of hurricane season, Chief of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Services, Mrs. Gracia Wheatley Smith, is urging residents, particularly those with chronic conditions, to ensure they have an adequate supply of medications at home.

Mrs. Wheatley Smith emphasized the importance of preparation for individuals with chronic health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. She advised these individuals to maintain at least a month’s supply of their medications to be well-prepared in the event of a storm.

“Sometimes, based on the forecast of the storms, there may not be sufficient time to go to the pharmacy and have medication prescriptions filled,” Mrs. Wheatley Smith cautioned.

“Weather conditions may deteriorate quickly, causing early closure of pharmacies or making roads impassable. That is why it is imperative for persons with chronic conditions to be adequately prepared as we enter the peak of the hurricane season,” she added.

In addition to advising those with chronic illnesses, Mrs. Wheatley Smith also called on parents to ensure they have medications for pain and fever on hand for their children. She noted that in severe weather, accessing medical care might not be feasible, making it crucial to have necessary medications readily available.

The Chief of Drugs further reminded residents to store their medications properly to maintain their effectiveness. She also urged that medications be kept out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
