BVI CANCER SOCIETY DONATES MRI INJECTOR TO BVIHSA IN MEMORY OF KIRIMA FORBES

The BVI Cancer Society has made a significant contribution to the fight against cancer in the Virgin Islands by donating a state-of-the-art MRI Injector machine to the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA).

The donation, made in honour of the late Kirima Shameka Forbes, was presented during a heartfelt ceremony on Friday, October 18, at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

The MRI Injector machine, which will enhance the hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat cancer, was secured after a long process of working with a vendor, explained Dr. Aasha Marie Flax-Miller during the ceremony.

Dr. Flax-Miller noted that the Cancer Society had expressed its commitment to making a meaningful donation to improve cancer care in the territory.

Gloria Fahie, President of the BVI Cancer Society, spoke about the lasting legacy of Kirima Forbes. She reflected on her connection with Forbes, emphasizing that her memory will always be cherished by the Cancer Society.

Kamika Forbes, Trustee on the BVI Cancer Society Board, also shared emotional remarks about her sister, describing her as someone who, despite her battle with cancer, remained strong and committed to helping others.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the BVIHSA, Dr. June Samuel, made sure to attend the ceremony despite being on leave. She expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that the machine will significantly benefit the hospital’s cancer treatment services.

Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Vincent Wheatley spoke about the challenges the Virgin Islands faces in the healthcare sector, particularly in addressing cancer. He underscored the importance of early detection and how the new MRI Injector machine would aid in that effort.
