A local media house recently reported on an international medical marijuana plot being exposed. The post was entitled Medical Marijuana Plot Exposed, BVI Beware. The article reported on an international company by the name of Symtomax Group which is offering a 12 million euros bond for a medical cannabis production facility in Portugal.

The article said the report was according to Offshore Alerts which also listed BVI as one of the countries involved in the scheme.

The reporters at 284 News reached out to the Premier of the Virgin Islands, Hon. Andrew Fahie who disproved of the allegations. He said “Clearly the way this supposing existing media house wrote this baseless article leaves a lot to be desired. We cannot speak for any media report on the company in question as that is independent to the Government of the Virgin Islands but to link the Government of the Virgin Islands in the same report appears quite malicious to say the least. The Government of the Virgin Islands, to date, has not contracted any company dealing with this new initiative. The first approach being taken is one of public education as well as the drafting of new legislation and amendments to existing legislations.”

The Premier expressed his disappointment in the media house’s effort to misinform the people of the Virgin Islands and promised to investigate the source.  “This unidentified source from which this article has been created intent seems to be one to blatantly attempt to mislead while trying to cast doubts in the minds of the people of the Virgin Islands towards this new initiative and their Government. We will not stop until we find who is behind this maliciously written Act and have the matter dealt with accordingly. The Government of the Virgin Islands will remain steadfast in purpose and diligent action and we will not be daunted by such political mischief such as what has now coincidentally surfaced” … he said.
