GOVERNMENT AND CIVIC ORGANISATIONS PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO FAMILIES

Local civic organisations joined the Government of the Virgin Islands to assist vulnerable groups with getting food and other essentials prior to the COVID-19 24-hour lockdown.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie said, “As a Government we thank the Family Support Network, the Social Development Department, the Rotary Clubs of the BVI, the Red Cross, the Lions Club  and other civic-minded organisations and persons for joining with the Government to help the community. 

The Premier expressed his gratitude to members of his Government who support the cause with the interest of the Virgin Islands population in mind.

 “I also thank all my Government members, all 13 elected Representatives for assisting in this important time when our people needed us now more than ever,” he said.

The Territory’s leader added, “As Premier, I stated to all these organisations and elected officials that funding was made available to assist them with ensuring that families and individuals in need get the necessary food supply to sustain them during this 14-day curfew.”

He further stated that the Government is working on an Economic Stimulus Package, to further assist the people and businesses of the BVI.

The Government of the Virgin Islands allocated $12 million dollars  to ensure the procurement of the necessary supplies and structure needed for preparedness to manage COVID-19 in the Virgin Islands.

The Government imposed a mandatory 24-hour lockdown under the Curfew (No.4) Order, 2020 to monitor and contain the spread of COVID-19 in the Virgin Islands.
