The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has implemented a new seven days “24-hour” curfew in light of the recent confirmed case of COVID-19 in the British Virgin Islands.
The new lockdown will run from Sunday April 19th at 6am to Saturday April 25th, 2020. This is in a strict effort to contain any possible spread of the virus and to allow medical professionals to conduct thorough contact tracing.
In an effort to alleviate food concerns, the Government made a decision to finance and distribute basic food care packages and medication for persons in need in each district. Seniors and vulnerable persons will be prioritized. This new system will be facilitated through the approved supermarkets and delivery systems.
It is important to note that supermarkets will “not” be open to the general public.
Cabinet also approved the following
- Supermarkets, pharmacies and water delivery services will be open only for serving deliveries.
- Approved home delivery service for essential food supply only from approved supermarkets.
- Home deliveries for LPG Cooking gas.
- Cabinet also agreed on further discussion with supermarkets on the ordering and delivering capacity.
The Premier instructed “all” other businesses not specified above to remain closed for the duration of the extended curfew period.
The leader of the territory reassured residents that no one will go hungry in the territory under his watch as Premier and Minister of Finance.
Health and safety has remained at the forefront of decisions made by the Government in the fight against Coronavirus. In closing Premier Fahie said “we will get through this together”
Cabinet will convene tomorrow for further discussions on how to lead the territory forward.
