A lot of things have changed amid the COVID-19 pandemic but some things are still business as usual. Countries are scheduled for general elections and not even COVID-19 could put a stop to it.
As of Tuesday, the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis has been dissolved.
The dissolution of the National Assembly means that within 90 days the people of St. Kitts and Nevis will head to the polls to give a five-year mandate to a new government.
In an address Wednesday evening Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris said, “We are a Country governed by laws and our Constitution is our supreme law. Our Constitution is very clear. Every parliament shall continue for five years from the date of the first sitting of the National Assembly after an election and shall then end, unless sooner dissolved.”
He said he instructed the Governor General Sir S.W Tapley Seaton on Tuesday to dissolve the National assembly as it is almost five years since the first sitting of the National Assembly after the previous election.
He said the next election will chart the way forward for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. “The next election will bring certainty to our Federation, preserve our democracy and allow us to continue to deliver a brighter future, creating employment and prosperity, building bigger homes and keeping us safe. Let us stay together and see this through,” Dr. Harris concluded.
The incumbent Team Unity Administration is expecting to go head to head at the polls with the opposition Labour Party in St. Kitts and the Nevis Reformation Party in Nevis.
