Coming out of a press release from the Opposition, Honourable Marlon A. Penn has stated that the Government of the Virgin Islands is recklessly spending money instead of implementing a stimulus plan for the people of the Territory.
Referring to the failing house to house waste collection programme, Honourable Penn said the funds could be diverted to other areas such as Income Support and Work for Pay Programmes both of which were recommendations set forth by the Opposition Leader and members of the Opposition in their plan COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan.
Honourable Penn pointed out that while the Premier has made a weak attempt to create jobs and business opportunities, the house to house waste collection initiative is grossly flawed, as it is being operated in conjunction with the regular communal bin collection to the tune of US$800,000.
“At a time when the Territory has not seen any revenue for the past three months, the funds currently being spent should have been directed to a stimulus plan to bring relief to the people of the Territory,” Honourable Penn expressed.
In a ZBVI radio interview on May 21, the Leader of the Opposition implored the Premier to get on with the job at hand and act in the best interest of the people.
Speaking on the Opposition’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan, the Opposition Leader explained that the plan is aimed at delivering good outcomes to improve the current declining state of the Virgin Islands economy and ultimately improve the livelihood of all residents in the Virgin Islands.
Honourable Penn further stated that the Opposition members have offered support and suggestions, both privately and publicly, to the current administration in an effort to help navigate the Territory through the COVID-19 crisis.
The Opposition Leader along with the members of the Opposition have pledged their commitment in continuing to bring forth solutions on behalf of the people during this crisis.
