Minister of Labor, Honorable Vincent Wheatley today said that BVIslanders and Belongers will not be given any preference in the allocation of the $10 Million grant afforded under Government’s Economic Stimulus plan. This revelation was made during an exclusive interview with 284 Media Reporter, Jovan Wilson.
The territory’s labor code specifies preference for BVIslanders in relation to employment opportunities, but the Minister said that will not be a determinant in this crisis. “Anyone contributing to the scheme is entitled to money from the scheme…once you are unemployed because of the pandemic” the Minister said.
As a result both locals and expatriates stand to benefit.
The Labor Minister further revealed that eligible persons will not receive full compensation. Instead, a percentage of the regular earnings will be allocated. Minister Wheatley clarified that the “range will be around $500-$1000, a percentage of your salary and not the entire thing.”
To ensure fair distribution Minister Wheatley said the Government will engage in cross referencing to prevent persons from exploiting the resources. He also mentioned that Government will conduct surveys to determine the underlying needs of persons heavily impacted by COVID-19.
