Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon. Kye Rymer, in a live forum announced that individuals and business affected by the recent bike curfew can apply for passes through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Cabinet approved the making of Regulation by the Minister in accordance Road Traffic Act, (CAP. 218), Section 56 to restrict the movement of three-wheel or less vehicles, which includes motorbikes and scooters, from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. for the safety and convenience of the public, for a period that will not exceed three (3) weeks.
Many business in the Virgin Islands utilizes scooter to carry out their day-to-day operations. This recent ban could potentially cause disruptions to these businesses and their operations.
Hon. Rymer ensured that the government is not hampering any business but the recent bike curfew is to prompt awareness.
Hon. Kye Rymer encourages business owners to contact or visit the DMV to apply for passes.
It was also mentioned that individual bike riders, whose working hours goes beyond the designated curfew, can also apply for passes through the DMV.
Mr. Gregory Skelton, Acting Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles, explained that persons are to present a 1) A job letter which should include the employees working hours 2) An ‘M’ class licence 3) Bike’s licences and insurance.
Special consideration will be given to Essential Workers, Custom Officers and Immigration Officers.
