Repairs to the grandstand at the A. O. Shirley Recreation ground are 80% completed. The damaged seating is being replaced and structural reinforcements were applied to the facility, its railings and the stairways.
The grandstand has a seating capacity for 1,000 persons and this multi-use facility is home to a gym and sick bay, both which received extensive remedial repairs. The Contractor Caribbean Environmental Restoration Limited awaits the arrival of the VIP seating to complete this project.
The repairs to the grandstand, gym and sick bay are one of eight activities of the broader A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground project. Five activities have been completed namely the installation of the Track; Bathrooms; Wall and Gates (External Perimeter Fence); Bathroom Groundworks & Drainage; and the Internal Trackside Fence. The new lights are ready to be shipped and the pavilion remains to be completed.
This is a Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture project which is being implemented with support of the RDA and in partnership with the Recreation Committee. It is jointly funded by the Government of the Virgin Islands, the BVI Olympic Committee and the BVI Athletic Association.
