The Cabinet of the Virgin Islands has now approved the reopening of additional businesses under the current 5pm to 5am curfew.
The new Curfew Order No. 29 will now include the following businesses to operate from 29th August, 2020, in addition to those listed in section 4 under Curfew Order No. 28:
- Hardware and building supplies stores
- Suppliers of hurricane shutters
- Construction teams with no more than 10 people;
- Restaurants for takeout and deliveries only,
- Computer equipment and office suppliers;
- Bakery supplies;
- Laundries for drop off and delivery/pick up only;
Churches and faith-based activities were also approved under the condition that gatherings must be limited to 10 or less persons.
The movement of intra-island ferries were permitted but they are strongly encouraged to adhere to the social distancing measures and protocols outlined.
Beach visitation hours have also been reduced, with new limited access between 5am and 12 noon.
Premier of the Virgin Islands, Honorable Premier Fahie said “these Cabinet Decisions took into consideration not only our ongoing fight against covid-19, but also out need to always be in a state of preparedness and readiness as we are in the Atlantic Hurricane Season.”
The amendment comes as great news as many residents raised concerns about their inability to access hardware stores to continue preparations for the hurricane season. Others complained about not having access to food, as some are without cooking equipment and faced challenges with the closure of restaurants.
Businesses approved to operate must ensure that operating times allow for staff to report to and leave work within the imposed curfew hours.
