In an effort to improve good governance in the territory, the British Virgin Islands government is urging residents to apply for the available vacancies of chairman and board members in a number of statutory boards and commissions.
These include the Gambling Control Commission, the Virgin Islands Trade Commission, the British Virgin Islands Airport Authority, the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority and the Prospect Reef Resort Board.
Speaking on the vacancies, Acting Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley said that his government decided to take the pivotal roles public for the first time in history, to strengthen the territory’s governance systems, its economy and its people.
He said, “The advertising of members of the board is Government’s ongoing efforts to further strengthen transparency and accountability in the Virgin Islands. We are preparing the BVI for a new, brighter and more resilient future.”
“This journey is ongoing and includes other areas such as the suite of good governance legislations as these efforts are being balanced with further strengthening of our economy while balancing lives with livelihood in this ‘New Regular’ of living and working with COVID-19,” Dr. Wheatley added.
The Seventh District Representative said that residents should apply for the available positions. Once the applications have been submitted, candidates will be interviewed and selected based on merit, prior experience and competence in the respective sector.
“We have a wealth of experience among us, and highly motivated people, who like me, strive for the betterment of these Islands. We are grateful for the contribution of the current board members and hope they will be further strengthened by new appointees,” Dr. Wheatley said.
Interested candidates are invited to apply on the government’s webpage for any of the interested positions and will have up until June 15 to submit applications.
