The recovery process of Premier Andrew Fahie’s elderly mother following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis is testament that the vaccine is effective.
This was the sentiment shared by the premier during his statement on Friday July 9, as he pleaded with the population to get vaccinated as the territory continues to see a spike in positive COVID-19 cases.
The premier said his mother who is in her 80’s had to be hospitalised after contracting the COVID-19 virus and according to the professionals, her being vaccinated played a major role in her recovery.
“I can share with you my family’s personal experience over the last week. My mother, who is in her 80’s, one of our golden citizens, had to be taken to the hospital where she tested positive for COVID-19. The doctors were able to explain to our family that due to her being fully vaccinated, significantly contributed to saving her life. Thank GOD she is now safely recuperating,” he stated.
Vaccine allows the body to fight the virus
Premier Fahie said while the vaccine does not stop anyone from contracting the virus, it acts as a shield to an individual immune system which helps them to fight off the virus.
“This encounter was indeed very scary and traumatising. I would not wish anyone else to go through that experience. That is why I am saying that yes, it is possible for one to contract COVID-19 while being fully vaccinated. But the reality is, the vaccine allows the body to fight the virus with a high level of success. So, that is why I come to you with my personal experience strongly recommending that you get vaccinated,” he urged.
The vaccination process remains voluntary in the BVI, however, a number of businesses as of recent have been ordering their staff to become vaccinated or face the prospect of being terminated.
