SEA COWS BAY BASKETBALL CLUB INVITES CHILDREN (8-14) TO PARTICIPATE IN FREE BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL SUMMER CAMP INITIATIVE

The Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club has commenced its third annual free Basketball & Baseball (B & B) Youth Summer Camp initiative, which is set to continue over the next week at two locations on Tortola.

President of the Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club Milton McClean in an interview with 284 Media on Thursday August 12, said the summer clinics will be held at the Greenland playing field in East End and at Capoons Bay in the West End area.

According to McLean, the summer programme while at Greenland until tomorrow Saturday August 14 will be accessible to children from districts 6, 7 and 8 who are between the ages of 8 and 14.

Children from districts 1, 2 and 3 will have an opportunity to take part in the summer camp from Tuesday August 17 to Friday August 20 at the playing field in Capoons Bay.

The basketball clinic will take place from 9am to 11:30am, while the baseball clinic will commence from 12:30 pm and run until 3pm at both locations.

President McLean spoke on the origin of the summer camp which is being sponsored by the BVI Olympic Committee for a third consecutive year.

He said, “After the hurricanes of 2017 there was little to no sporting activity, so Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club started an initiative in the summer of 2018, which was basketball and baseball clinics (B&B) for young kids from about the age of 8 to 14. So since that time we have been running it. We had it sponsored by the Guana Fund and over the past three years the BVI Olympic Committee has sponsored the event.”

McLean also said that since the inception of the programme it has been well received from children across the territory.

He said to date, approximately 60 percent of the children are males while the remaining 40 percent are females.

“It has been well received especially when we moved to the East End area last year. We started out in Road Town by the field, then we had one in Sea Cows Bay and for the past couple of years we are now at Greenland and East End. So this year we are primarily in the East End area and the YEP Programme is a very big supporter of the clinic, both girl and boys, especially from the YEP Programme take part along with other kids in the area,” he explained.

As previously stated, the Greenland leg of the programme concludes tomorrow August 14th, while the Capoons Bay leg commences from Tuesday August 17th and runs until Friday August 20th.
