Seat belt offenders topped the list of persons who were ticketed by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force over the past week, amounting to 33 of 51 tickets issued.
This was confirmed by a media release by the RVIPF on Monday August 23, which said the Road Policing and Armed Response Teams were joined this weekend by officers from east and west and the Marine Unit, who issued 51 tickets and seized five scooters.
“Of the 51 tickets issued in last Friday’s operation, 33 were for drivers not wearing their seatbelts. Five tickets were for those riding without helmets and another eight for driving while using a cellular phone. Twelve other persons were reported for offences ranging from unlicensed vehicles to prohibited tints. One person received a ticket for stopping alongside a vehicle while in traffic,” the release stated.
Acting Sergeant of the Road Policing Unit Kishon Leslie says a practice seen often on the roadways is drivers stopping along the side of another vehicle to converse.
He said this is a ticketable offence and draws a fine of $100.
