ONLINE WORK PERMIT SYSTEM NOW ONLY ACCEPTING NEW WORK PERMIT APPLICATIONS FOLLOWING TECHNICAL AND HUMAN RESOURCES CHALLENGES

Technical and human resources challenges have resulted in the recently launched Online Work Permit System now only accepting new work permit applications, effective immediately.

This was confirmed by Acting Labour Commissioner Mrs. Michelle McLean who made the disclosure during a media release from the Department of Labour and Workforce Development on Wednesday December 15.

She revealed that the system was initially developed to accommodate only new work permit applications. However, due to COVID-19 lockdown, she said in July 2021, a decision was made to utilize the system for other categories of work permit applications.

Commenting on the change, she said, “due to technical and human resources challenges being experienced by both the Department of Labour and Workforce Development and the Immigration Department, a decision has been made to temporarily accept only new work permit applications online as this approach will significantly reduce wait time,”

The Acting Labour Commissioner further said that her department has been working closely with the Department of Information Technology to ensure that applications for the other types of work permits are available on the BVI government’s website for employers and employees to print and complete.

The Department of Labour and Workforce Develop also encouraged businesses and residents to contact 468-4707 or 468-4708 to make an appointment to facilitate the payment of the $50.00 application processing fee, to avoid any delays.

“For online new work permit applications, a copy of the “Dashboard” listing the work permit application(s) submitted should accompany the requisite payment. For convenience, a Drop Box has been installed on the 1st Floor of the Department to submit cheques payable to the “Accountant General” for the employers and employees desirous of submitting their processing fees without an appointment. A receipt will be available for collection within 48 hours of submission,” the department stated.
