The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has completed its installation of 10 CCTV cameras on the sister island of Virgin Gorda, which have been placed in strategic locations to combat crime.
Commissioner of Police Mark Collins gave the update to media officials during a recent press conference.
He said, “A major fight against crime is the reinstallation of CCTV territory-wide and I mentioned this before at my first press conference. We are happy to announce that the re-installation of CCTV cameras in Virgin Gorda is complete. 10 cameras on Virgin Gorda and lots of hard work and contributions from many, both in the private and public sectors, have assisted in making this happen.”
“I want to particularly acknowledge our own Communications Team in the Force for their hard work and dedication to the task. Work continues in rolling out CCTV across Tortola, which I understand is earmarked to be finished and finalized by May of this year,” he added.
Commissioner Collins, while only confirming that the cameras to be installed on Tortola are expected to be completed in the next few months, did reveal last May that some 178 cameras were to be installed on the island.
At the time, he said the installations were going to start in central Road Town and then continue towards the other ends of the island.
Collins also revealed during the most recent press conference that both the CCTV cameras on Virgin Gorda and Tortola will be remotely monitored by the RVIPF’s control room at the headquarters on Tortola.
He said, “These are placed on strategic places on Virgin Gorda that we will have the ability to view by both the Virgin Gorda Police Station and back here in the police control room as well, as we will with all of the cameras on the territory as well.”
