OPPOSITION LEADER MARLON A PENN PAYS TRIBUTE TO STALWART BUSINESSMAN CLARENCE C THOMAS

In a recent Facebook post, Leader of the Opposition and District 8 representative Hon. Marlon A Penn paid tribute to stalwart businessman Clarence C Thomas who passed away on January 21st, 2022.

Mr. Thomas, 86 years was well known for his contributions towards the businessman community in providing empire-building initiatives that allowed Virgin Islanders a door to small businesses and a number of philanthropic efforts both through his business and the Rotary Club of Tortola.

Penn began by extending his condolences to the family of the late Clarence C Thomas stating, “As Leader of the Opposition, the Eighth District Representative and more so, as a family friend, it is with great sorrow that I express my deepest condolences to the entire Thomas family. To his wife, Mrs. Maybel, his children, Thomas, Michael, Neil, David and Jacqueline, we mourn with you on the passing of a devoted family man, a man of integrity, a visionary and, of course, a nation builder, Mr. Clarence Thomas OBE.”

Early Pioneer

Hon Penn spoke about Thomas and his exceptional pioneering of business in the Virgin Islands, stating, “Mr. Thomas was one of our early pioneers who created pathways, to sustain and maintain the economic growth of our country. In 1967, he started one of the first plumbing companies in the BVI. Truly a man of vision, he later expanded that business to offer goods and services in all facets of the construction industry.

It is often said that the strength of a nation depends on the strength of its people. I will particularly remember the strong business acumen he possessed, which contributed to the success of his business. Mr. Thomas was a living icon and a successful entrepreneur. His model business skills were passed down to his sons, Michael and David, who in following in his footsteps, relocated and expanded the establishment to Fish Bay in 2015, as a Superstore and Lumber Yard.

His philosophical beliefs and life work were further demonstrated as a Rotarian, being one of the early members of the Rotary Club of Tortola. He personified the motto: “Service Above Self and One Profits Most Who Serves Best”. Mr. Clarence Thomas helped to build our Territory through his selfless acts of love. He created opportunities to enable a better future for countless citizens and residents; we will forever be grateful for his significant contributions to our Territory.

On behalf of my family, and the entire Territory, especially the East End/Long Look community, I extend deepest condolences to the family circle in this their time of bereavement. May Almighty God continue to grant you comfort and strength during this difficult time.”
