DR. PICKERING REFUSES TO DISCLOSE WHY THE AIRPORT EXPANSION PROJECT FAILED

Former Deputy Premier and Minister of Natural Resources and Labour Dr. Kedrick Pickering has refused to disclose why the plans for the expansion of the Terrence B Lettsome International Airport halted at the tender process stage.

This was after approximately $10 million of taxpayers’ money had already been spent.

Dr. Pickering came under heavy questioning on the subject matter after his recent appearance on the Honestly Speaking radio programme with host Claude ‘Skelton’ Cline.

During his interview, the former minister who was responsible for the expansion of the airport at the time, said he accepted full responsibility for the failure of the project, which saw approximately $10 millions being expended into several pre-development researches and feasibility studies.

Bound by collective responsibility

Despite accepting full responsibility for the failure of the project which occurred under the National Democratic Party Administration, when grilled by Cline as to why the project failed to pass the tender process, Dr. Pickering declined to answer the question.

He said he was bound by collective responsibility as a former Cabinet Member and therefore could not disclose the reason why the project failed.

Alleges that internal conflict was the issue

After failing to get a response from the former minister, Cline proceeded to explain what he alleges was the real issue behind the halting of the project.

He claimed that the project was halted because of internal conflict within the NDP Administration.

Airport expansion necessary

Meanwhile, Dr. Pickering also said that the expansion of the runway at Terrance B Lettsome International Airport is critically important for the development of the BVI’s economy.

He said there is no other choice but to develop the Beef Island airport if the territory is to remain relevant as a top tourist destination.
