The BVI Women’s National Football team delivered a much better all-round performance in their second game of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, but lost 0-4 to host Honduras.
Playing at the Estadio General Francisco Morazan stadium, the BVI girls displayed discipline and determination to reach the halftime stage at just one goal down to their much more experienced opposition.
Despite the defeat, there were still several promising signs displayed by some of the BVI players.
Top of that list was goalkeeper Britney Peters who saved 15 attempts at goal from the 38 total shots that were taken by Honduras.
In a subsequent media release, Coach Wayne Phillip was understandably upset to suffer defeat but was also proud of the team’s performance and confident that going forward good things would come.
He said, “I’m super impressed with them…from the time we trained yesterday I felt different vibes and a positive attitude. Today the way they approached the game, they were very aggressive, tackling and very positive. We now know we have to work especially hard on things like fitness, but they stuck to it and I’m super proud”
Phillip also said he believes that continued work with the current crop of players will see them able to match more illustrious teams across the region.
“In the future we are going to be one of the stronger teams in the Caribbean,” he stated
The next few games for BVI Women’s National team are all scheduled for early April 2022 which will see them facing St Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Haiti.
