SUPPLY LINE DELAYS, DOCUMENTATION ISSUES AND FINANCIAL CHALLENGES BLAMED FOR THE MOORINGS DELINQUENCY IN GETTING CHARTERS IN COMPLIANCE

Supply line delays, documentation issues and financial challenges due to the pandemic were among the reasons listed by the Moorings for their recent noncompliance of the BVI sailing laws.

This was the message delivered by the Vice President of the Moorings and Sunsail Peter Cochran during an urgent press conference which was held last Friday.

The press conference resulted from a week of activities by the Customs Department where more than $100 million worth of yachts belonging to the Moorings, were detained by Customs.

VP Cochran also said that health and safety is a key priority of the Moorings. He said his company will be working to be in full compliance with the BVI sailing laws.

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew Fahie said the Department of Customs and the BVI Shipping Registry will be working collaboratively to assist all delinquent charter companies into getting in compliance with the law.

Customs received criticism by locals and persons abroad after the large exercise was reported by the media.

However, Premier Fahie came to their defense, stating, Customs were simply doing their job and had they not, the government would have been criticized if a safety related accident occurred out at sea.
