A call is being made for people with Down Syndrome to be fully included in all aspects of societal life and living as the world observes World Down Syndrome Day.
In a Government Information Services release, Social Worker at the Social Development Department Mrs. Marshay Smith said “We continue to see changes locally and internationally toward persons with Down Syndrome.” She added, “We continue to advocate for those with Down Syndrome and other persons with disabilities to be included in all various pursuits.”
As part of activities to promote awareness and support the wellbeing of persons living with the condition, representatives from the social development team made presentations at the Althea Scatliffe Primary, Enis Adams Primary and the BVI Seventh-Day Adventist schools.
World Down Syndrome Day is being observed under the theme, “We Decide” and is inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This will focus on the right of participation for those living with the condition.
Down Syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. The condition leads to mild or severe impairment and physical abnormalities including short stature and broad facial profile.
