GOV’T DENOUNCES RUMOURS OF WAGING WAR ON LOCAL BUSINESSES

The leader of Government business Premier the Honourable Andrew Fahie has denounced recent rumours which suggest that his government has waged a war against local businesses.

The allegations stem from the government’s recent decision to establish a task force in the territory which will be responsible for patrolling local companies to minimize the prospect of price gouging.

Premier Fahie made the comment during the VIP Let’s Talk radio programme.

The premier also explained that his government’s aim of the initiative is to ensure that the people of the territory are not placed at a disadvantage.

Meanwhile Leader of the Opposition Honourable Marlon Penn called the government’s initiative pointless, stating that the task force has no legal authority to enforce measures on a business.

He said legislations such as the Consumer Protection Act and bodies such as the Trade Commission are the legal authority to tackle anything relating to price gouging in the territory.

Penn believes that the government dropped the ball by not having all the necessary elements in place to have the Trade Commission fully functional to tackle the issue of price gouging in the BVI.

Penn also stressed on the need for the government to have dialogue with the business community.
