BVI RED CROSS HANDOVER OF ‘ENHANCED VULNERABILITY CAPACITY ASSESSMENT’ TO THE EAST END/LONG LOOK COMMUNITY

On Thursday, March 31st 2022, the BVI Red Cross officially presented the East End/Long Look Enhanced Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (EVCA) report to Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley, 7th District Representative and Honorable Marlon Penn, 8th District Representative on behalf of the East End/Long Look community. An EVCA is a community-led process that allows residents to identify the top three widespread hazards that affect the community in which they live, identify their vulnerabilities to those hazards, identify their capacities to deal with them and determine mitigation strategies to further build on the community’s capacity to deal with the identified hazards. The assessment process took place in the community in 2021, during the month of November. Ms. Kristi Creque, the Disaster Manager at the BVI Red Cross, presented the results from assessment of which the top three hazards with the most widespread impact on the community were Hurricanes, COVID-19 Pandemic and Mosquitoes.

Director of the BVI Red Cross, Ms. Stacy Lloyd said, “The assessment work that we are doing in the communities throughout the Territory, allows us to have vital information that is specific to the community, which will aid in our response efforts in times of emergency/ disaster. We thank the members of the East End/ Long Look Community for seeing and understanding this concept and we look forward to continuing or work in the community and future communities of which we hope to undertake this process.” The BVI Red Cross will be hosting activities for the residents of East End/Long Look including free First-Aid & CPR trainings, Community clean ups, Preparedness meetings etc., which is being financed by the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF).
