Local top female sprinter Adaejah Hodge stormed her way to victory in the Under 17 Girls 100-meter dash to become the first female BVI athlete to win gold in 100 meters at the CARIFTA Games.
Competing in Kingston Jamaica on Saturday April 16, Hodge dismantled her competition to win the race in a time of 11.29 seconds, just .02 seconds shy of the 2018 CARIFTA record which is held by Jamaican Briana Williams.
Second place went to Shatalya Dorsett of the Bahamas who ran 11.80 seconds, while bronze went to Jamaican Theianna Terrelonge.
Earlier in the day the BVI was awarded its first gold medal of the Games in the Under 17 Girls Shot Put event thanks to Savianna Joseph.
Joseph put a distance of 13.54 meters to win the event. Second place went to Jamaica’s Nastassia Burrel while Bahamian Terrell McCoy copped bronze.
The final medal on the day came in the Girl’s Under 17 High Jump event thanks Jah’kyla Morton who scaled the bar with height of 1.60 meters.
In the Octathlon Jelani Croal won both the 400-meter heat and the Long Jump event, and placed 3rd in the 100-meter race.
Meanwhile in some of the other final events involving BVI athletes, Kaelyaah Liburd and Akrisa Eristee placed 4th and 5th respectively in the Under 20 Girls 400-meter; Wanyae Belle finished 5th in the Under 20 Boys 100-meter dash; Palesa Caesar finished 6th in the Under 20 Discus Throw event; and Orlando Douglas placed 5th in the Under 20 Discuss Throw.
Day 2 of the CARIFTA Games will continue on Sunday.
