NATURAL RESOURCES MINISTER VINCENT WHEATLEY ENCOURAGES OVERSEAS TERRITORIES TO JOIN FORCES FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and 9th District Representative Hon. Vincent O. Wheatley who is presently away from the territory attending a Summit on Climate Change in the Bahamas took a moment to issue a statement via his Facebook page.

In encourage overseas territories to join forces for climate change. Minister Whealtey said, “As Overseas Territories we may differ on many issues, however, one that we all have in common is the effects of Climate Change on our respective territories. We are all on the front line when it comes to effects of it. We as Ministers of the Environment have therefore pledge to come together to support each other as we mitigate and adapt to climate change. After a very successful Climate Summit and other meetings in TCI, I continue my Climate Change agenda in the Bahamas where I will be meeting with the Climate Change and Environmental Advisory Unit of the Prime Minister’s Office tomorrow. Their newly developed Bahamas Climate Change and Carbon Market Initiative Bill 2022 is a cutting edge piece of legislation and I look forward to learning more about it as we explore new avenues of partnerships and collaboration, as we all battle against climate change.”

The event is being hosted by the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) under the Ministry of Tourism, Environment, Fisheries and Marine Affairs, Culture and Heritage, Agriculture, Religious Affairs and Gaming.

Before departing for the summit, Wheatley said, “It is an honour for me to join other Overseas Territories as we face the effects of climate change and plan the way forward. It is important that we share our knowledge while learning from others, we all have to do our part as there is only one earth and we must invest in it.”

The summit which is being held on the island of Providenciales is under the theme “One Earth: Investing in Our Planet”.

During his time away, Minister Wheatley is said to have visited various facilities throughout the Bahamas with officials from the Office of the Prime Minister from April 24 to 27 to observe procedures and mechanisms relating to environmental conservation and preservation. A high level meeting will be held on April 25.
