TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF BVI CONSTITUTION AMONG COI REPORT RECOMMENDATIONS

The temporary partial suspension of the territory’s Constitution is among the main highlighted recommendations outlined by the Commissioner of Inquiry (COI) Sir Gary Hickinbottom in the recently published COI report.

Governor His Excellency John Rankin made the disclosure during a press conference which was held on Friday April 29.

According to the governor, the 946-page report from Sir Hickinbottom which provided 45 recommendations, concluded that the evidence overwhelmingly confirmed instances of corruption and poor governance practices and principals among government officials and within the BVI’s government system.

To this end, Governor Rankin said there were “four overarching recommendations” within the report with the temporary partial suspension of the BVI’s constitution being the first.

The other recommendations from the report included the fast tracking of the Constitutional Review process as well as the conducting of several independent audits and investigations within various government organisations and statutory bodies.

Governor Rankin also hinted at the possibility of several criminal investigations resulting from the COI report.

The governor said the findings and recommendations will now have to be discussed among himself, the Minister of Overseas Territories, the Right Honourable Amanda Millings, Members of the sitting Government and Opposition Members.
