SUGAR BOYS FC COMPLETED A CLEAN SWEEP AFTER WINNING THE PRESIDENTS CUP

The Sugar Boys Football Club completed a clean sweep of titles after defeating Panthers Football Club 2-nil to lift the Presidents Cup on Sunday 26th June at East End / Long Look.

The reigning national league champions Sugar Boys opened the scoring within five minutes of the second half as Oswart Holder found himself unmarked at the far post and headed home.

The second goal came from a free-kick right on the edge of the 18-yard box, which was curled around the Panthers’ defensive wall by German Gonzalez.

Following the victory, Sugar Boys was awarded both the Presidents Cup and their National League Championship Trophy, as well as the Under 13 Youth Championship Trophy.

Gonzalez received the National League MVP award while Sugar Boys’ Captain Derol Redhead was named Player of the Season.

284News caught up with Redhead to speak about the victory and his team’s performance over the season.

We also touched base with goal scorer Holder, who spoke on behalf of his comrade Gonzalez.

Meanwhile, the President of the BVI Football Association Mr. Andy Bickerton congratulated both teams for exhibiting a great display of football on the night.

The Football Association also presented all of the end of season awards.

For the Under 13’s, the FA’s Executive Member, Ms. Loralee Abrams presented Panthers FC as the U13 runners-up, with Jevonne Stevens of Sugar Boys receiving the Best Goalkeeper award.

Best Midfielder went to Shamouri Leonard also of Sugar Boys while Panthers FC took the remaining awards with Mario Carter winning Best Defender, Mitchel Williams Best Forward, and Myles Penn Most Goals.

The Under 18 award winners were presented by First Vice-President Mr. Avanel Morton and included; league champions, VG Utd; runners up, Wolues FC; Best Goalkeeper, Jerique Samuels, (VG Utd); Best Defender, Michael Palladino (Wolues FC); Best Midfielder, Joel Mars (VG Utd); Best Forward, Adrian Padilla (One Caribbean FC); and Most Goals, Sam Potgeiter (Wolues FC).

The women’s awards were presented by General Secretary, Ms. Juliana Luke and went to the fourth placed team, the Panthers FC; third-placed Wolues FC; runners-up VG Utd and League Champions, Avengers FC.

In the women’s individual awards, Britney Peters (Avengers FC) won Best Goalkeeper; Ariel Mohammed (Wolues FC), Best Defender; Kezia Gumbs (VG Utd), Best Midfielder; Chelsea Edwardes (Wolues FC), Best Youth Player; and MVP went to Lil-Makeda Fahie (Avengers FC). Manager of the year was Gloria Fahie (Avengers FC), and the Fair Play award went to Wolues FC.

In the National League, Trophies were presented by President Bickerton to Wolues FC for finishing fourth, Panthers FC as third, and runners Up Panthers FC. The Golden Gloves Award went to Willis Buckley (Panthers FC); Golden Boot to Wayne Phillip (Panthers FC); while Youth Player of the Season went to Johari Lacey.

Lenon Audain (Rebels FC) took Manager of the Year, and the Fair Play Award went to Old Madrid FC.

Match officials, Laura Pompey, Tashana, and Referee of the Year Carl Barrett, were also presented with trophies.

Special awards went to Quehlani Nickie, Johari Lacey, Justin Smith, Sheldon Toney, Levon Williams, Mekhi Walters, Jalen Prentice, and Michael Palladino for their exploits on the field as well as for their academic achievements.
