“GOVERNOR TURNBULL SERVED THE PEOPLE OF THE USVI WITH DISTINCTION, HE WAS A DEAR FRIEND OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS AND A BELONGER.”-PREMIER WHEATLEY

In an official statement, Premier of the Virgin Islands Dr. Hon. Natalio Wheatley shared his sentiments on the passing of former USVI Governor Charles W. Turnbull.

Former Governor of the United States Virgin Islands Charles W. Turnbull passed away on Sunday July 3rd, 2022 at the age of 87. At the time of his passing Charles was on the U.S. mainland.

Turnbull was elected governor in 1998 under the Democratic Party and served as governor for 8 years.

Prior to being elected governor, Turnbull had a full career in education across the Virgin Islands.

Premier Wheatley in his statement said, “I was saddened to learn of the passing of former Governor of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) Charles W. Turnbull. Governor Turnbull served the people of the USVI with distinction for two consecutive terms (1999 to 2007) and made an invaluable contribution to the development of the Territory.”

Strong BVI Ties

Premier Wheatley also spoke of Turnbull’s strong BVI heritage. Adding, “He was a dear friend of the British Virgin Islands and a Belonger who was instrumental in the strengthening of ties between the “Greater Virgin Islands” that saw the revival of the renamed Inter-Virgin Islands Council and the renewal of ties for the USVI-BVI Friendship Day.

On behalf of the Government and people of the British Virgin Islands, I extend deepest condolences to the family of the late former Governor Charles W. Turnbull. I also extend condolences to the people of the United States Virgin Islands.”
