Minister for Education Honourable Sharie de Castro has congratulated students who have emerged successfully from their studies despite the challenges experienced throughout the 2021-2022 school year.
The minister noted that despite several shocks dealt to the education sector over the past few years, teachers and students in the British Virgin Islands “have continued to demonstrate great resilience as they dealt with the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic”.
De Castro, who addressed the House of Assembly on the heels of the June-July graduation season, said that the majority of students throughout the territory performed exceptionally in their exit examinations.
At the primary level, she said that out of 330 students from schools across the territory, 310 students were promoted to grade seven, while the remaining 20 will be required to do remedial work while transitioning to the next grade.
Meanwhile, for grade 12 students, 168 out of 224 students enrolled were successful in examinations, representing a success rate of 75% for this group. Of the group, 104 students received honours, 7 of which were high honours.
“I offer sincere congratulations to all our students and commend principals and teachers who have contributed to their success this academic year”, De Castro told the HOA.
She noted that while celebrating these successes, the Ministry of Education remains cognisant of the challenging time that students are facing and is making the necessary interventions to assist – including summer school for students who would have been unsuccessful in select subject areas.
The program, which commenced on July 5th, targeted 189 students from grades 10-12.
152 of these students were from the Elmore Stoutt High School, 22 of these students were from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre and 15 of them were from the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies.
Of this group, 70 of the students were attending Exit Proficiency Examination preparation classes. The students re-sat the Exist Proficiency Examination on July 29, 2022.
