Rea Vanterpool of Virgin Gorda last evening Saturday August 20th, won the Adult Spell Off Competition. The fundraiser was held at the Eileen L Parsons Auditorium, began promptly at 7:30pm and saw great community support.
There were three rounds of the competition which challenged the contestants with everyday words, Virgin Islands dialect and VI nomenclature.
Placing second, just five points behind Ms Vanterpool was Mr Raesron Sambury with third place going to Ms Desiraé Pemberton.
Vanterpool and Sambury were tied at the end of the third round, forcing the competition to a tie-breaker.
At the end of the competition Ms. Vanterpool randomly selected Kiddy’s Nook to receive the proceeds of the night.
Prizes were as follows: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively won $1000.00, $600.00 and $400.00, along with other gifts.
The other four participants were also presented with prizes.
Organizer of the event Mr. Darryl Flanders in an official comment said, “The Adult Spell-Off 2022 was a huge success. We are grateful for all who came out to support as we were able to reach our fundraising goal. I congratulate all the spellers on a job well done and offer special congratulations to Ms. Rea Vanterpool for capturing the title and grand prize. Thank you to all of our sponsors as we could not have done it without them or have been able to offer those amazing prizes! We look forward to next year’s competition!”
It is hoped that the event will become an annual one promoting literacy in the Virgin Islands.
