COI REPORT DRAWING ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE BVI’S OTHER NEEDS – SAYS WALWYN

Former Legislator Myron Walwyn is of the opinion that the government’s commitment to satisfying the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry Report is drawing attention away from pressing in-country issues that need to be addressed.

“We have this COI report that in my humble opinion is sucking up almost all of the air in the room, and the whole issue about actually governing the country, paying attention to the economy I think has taken a back seat”, he said.

Walwyn spoke during an appearance on the Umoja talk show this week.

He told host Edju Enka that evidence of this neglect presents itself in the country’s infrastructure.

“Take the attention of infrastructure of the country, it has taken a backseat because all the efforts seem to be trying to just satisfy this… Yes, we have to address these issues but we have to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time”, he said.

Though Walwyn admits that it is vital for the BVI to undergo reforms, and maintain a positive relationship with the United Kingdom, he stressed that this should not come at the cost of abandoning the territory’s other interests.

“The relationship between the BVI and the United Kingdom is a very important one. One that we should try our utmost to preserve. And whether we remain as we are now… or we move to independence, the relationship with the United Kingdom because of their standing in the world… It is important that we keep that relationship intact. But that being the case, it doesn’t mean that you roll over and you play dead”, he said.
