LEGITIMATE PORTS OF ENTRY NOT TO BLAME FOR SURGE IN ILLEGAL FIREARMS

Former Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews has said that there is very little evidence to support claims that illegal firearms are entering the territory through the BVI’s legitimate ports of entry.

Matthews rejected the notion while appearing as a guest on the local radio programme Talking Points.

He said while serving as commissioner of police there was no substantial evidence gathered at the time which pointed to local legitimate ports as the gateway to illegal guns in the territory.

Matthews also spoke on the media’s influence on shaping the opinions of some residents, which he believes in some instances, damages the confidence of the public in local law enforcement.
