The Anegada Hybrid Renewable Energy and Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) Project is now expected to be completed by November 2023 following a ground breaking ceremony which was held on the sister island last Thursday.
The ground breaking ceremony comes nearly 30 months following the July 2020 announcement that renewable energy company Power52 was the winner of the contract and approximately 13 months following the signing of the contract in November 2021.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony, Deputy Premier and Minister for Communication and Works Honourable Kye Rymer expressed his excitement with the project finally getting started after numerous delays.
Minister Rymer also revealed that there are provisions within the already signed contract between the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) and Power52 to cushion any unpredictable economic impacts that may be sustained from global events.
He said this will likely result in the completed cost of the project exceeding the $4,687,944.72 that was announced during the signing of the contract.
Meanwhile, General Manager of BVIEC Mr. Leroy Abraham spoke to the many objectives that will be achieved once the project is completed.
Also speaking during the ceremony was District Representative Honourable Vincent Wheatley, who said the project is a testament of the territory’s commitment towards combating climate change.
